The Animal Adoption Center has rehomed approximately 3,500 animals and counting since the inception in 2004.

How to Adopt

Our goal is to ensure that your new four-legged friend arrives fully equipped with all the skills necessary to make a successful adjustment to their new home and family life. The adoption process begins with an application form and concludes after the successful completion of a two week trial period designed to ensure a smooth transition for the animal and the new adopter.

Step 1: Search our adoptable animals

Browse our animals on our website, Petfinder, Facebook or visit the AAC to meet them in person.

Step 2: Fill out an application

Dog ApplicationCat Application

Step 3: Adoption Requirements

  • Our dog adoption fee is $175 and the cat adoption fee is $80
  • Potential adopters are required to foster for at least one night. Once your application is reviewed and approved we move forward with the adoption! We honor a two-week trial period to make sure your new pet fits in well with your family and lifestyle.
  • If during the trial period you find that the animal is not a suitable match the adoption fee will be refunded.
  • Any animal adopted from the AAC is always welcomed back if for any reason you can no longer care for him or her at any point in their life.
  • Adopters must be at least 24 years old to adopt a cat or dog. If you are under the age of 24 you may be approved on a case by case basis if you have a co-signer that is older than 24 and can accept responsibility if something happens.
  • Adopters who rent their home must have landlord approval in order to adopt.
  • We welcome out of area adopters, however we require prospective adopters to visit our facility and spend at least one night with the animal.

Step 4: Congratulations! You are the new mom or dad to a fur-baby!

Seniors for Seniors

The Animal Adoption Center launched the Seniors for Seniors adoption program in 2019. It was developed to help senior humans rediscover the joys of having a cat or dog in their lives, and the program places senior cats and dogs (typically over 7 years of age) with senior citizens who are 65 years of age or older.

The Animal Adoption Centers’ expert matchmakers will help you select a companion who fits into your lifestyle and housing situation at a reduced adoption rate of $50 for dogs and $15 for cats. If you are interested in adopting a senior animal, please call us at 307.739.1881 or email us at adopt@animaladoptioncenter.org. You are more than welcome to fill out a dog adoption application or cat adoption application and we can keep our eye out for a great fit.

Benefits of adopting

  • Research tells us that companion animals, such as cats and dogs, can help improve our physical and mental health. By adopting and spending time with an animal friend, you can experience the benefits of lowered stress levels and blood pressure.
  • Cats and dogs provide friendship for lonely individuals, and open opportunities for interacting with others which an older person may miss if family is far away.
  • The company of a beloved pet has been proven to reduce depression.
  • The quiet and doting home of a senior citizen is the perfect match for an older animal looking for a new home.
  • Senior animals are often gentler, calmer companionship, and often are already trained.

****COURTESY LISTING*** PLEASE CONTACT THE FOSTER PROVIDED BELOWT TO INQUIRE MORE! Please contact Zarina at (307) 212-1245. Looking for a retirement home for a sweet, senior cat with so much love to give. Some of you may already know Roxy, a fifteen year old blind, declawed ? tabby who was surrendered to the shelter when her parent moved into the Senior Living Center. She had spent over a year in the shelter before we took her home in April to nurse her back to health. She was frail and lethargic with a dry coat and had a sadness to her. She only ate dry kibble and never took to wet food at the shelter. A little over 3 months later and we are happy to report that Roxy’s physique and muscle tone has improved. While her diet still needs to be monitored, she has started to eat moisture rich canned foods, and her coat is soft and shiny. We also learned that she absolutely enjoys playing with wand toys and hunting. She is so, so sharp and quick with her wand toys that you wouldn’t guess she is blind. She also loves to be touched, groomed and stay close to her human companions. Nothing makes her happier than to curl up on the couch with you while you read a book or watch television. While this sweet girl has been nursed to better health, we have also learned that Roxy would like to be the only cat of her household. She is very weary and uncomfortable with other cats approaching her, which has made it very difficult for her to acclimate and live comfortably in our home and it has been advised that Roxy should live her golden years in a single cat household in order to avoid unnecessary stress and keep her happy and healthy. Do you have a home where Roxy could settle down and live her golden years as your loving companion? All she needs is a comfortable place to nap, some playtime, healthy foods and a little companionship. Please contact Zarina at (307) 212-1245. *One month’s supply of Roxy’s favorite foods and probiotics will be provided, along with a litter box, bed, cat tree and toys.*

***COURTESY LISTING. PLEASE USE THE CONTACT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS ANIMAL OR ADOPT. THIS ANIMAL IS NOT PART OF THE AAC PROGRAM*** CONTACT: Katie - katie.raitz7@gmail.com "This is Tigger. He is my senior kitty handsome old man who is at the ripe age of 22 years old. I don’t know how he’s gotten to be this old, but he’s still in good health and 23 is coming soon on the horizon. I’ve had him his whole life, but I can no longer keep him because I do not have a cat-friendly place for him to settle down in during these last years. About 7 years ago he had hyperthyroidism and got very sick - he was successfully treated with i-9 radioactive therapy and has since not had any issues. Unfortunately he was declawed as a kitten, and he has always been an indoor cat. Tigger is pretty much totally deaf, and has cataracts. He’s a simple man - he just wants to be held and pet and rubbing his face against a warm, loving body. In this way, he’s the sweetest kitty you’ll ever meet. He loves attention and is so affectionate. He’s unabashedly playful and curious, as if he was still a kitten. He has some special needs though. He doesn’t consistently use the litter box- he will pee on carpet. He will poop outside the litter box. He vomits occasionally too, and is fed a sensitive stomach food. I had been keeping him in a confined space- a gate to keep him over a tarp I had put down so as to not ruin carpet. This doesn’t work out well for him because I’m sure he feels trapped in there and he’s taken to crying pretty loudly at times. I think with more freedom and space he will be happier. He loves to rest in sunlight, and I think an outdoor fenced in backyard opportunity would make him really happy, giving him interesting stimuli and still safety."

Boomer 2-3 years old, male, Yellow Lab My name is Boomer and I was originally found as a stray near the Palisades Dam and brought to the Idaho Falls Animal Shelter waiting for my people to come claim me. No one did and I was transferred to the AAC. I was so shy when I first arrived at the AAC but now that I have spent some time in loving foster homes I am feeling much more confident and happy. I am still cautious around new people and sudden movements make me a little nervous so I would do best in a home with older, dog savvy children that won't startle me too much. ***GINGER IS A COURTESY LISTING MEANING SHE IS NOT IN THE AAC PROGRAM*** PLEASE CONTACT HER CURRENT FOSTER LISTED IN HER DESCRIPTION. 307-217-2644 Our sweet Ginger (5-year-old Border Collie-Beagle mix) must be rehomed. A breed like hers needs plenty of activity and engagement that we cannot provide to her due to health and private circumstances. She was purchased as a puppy. She needs a family with kids or other pets, along with space to run. She is a great hiking dog, and protective of our cat. She is kennel trained, spayed, has a microchip, 2018 rabies shot, and is super healthy on a grain-free diet. She is around 50 lbs. She is not a lap dog or a lazy dog. She will become depressed if she doesn’t get much activity, so she needs consistency. She loves fetch, walks, and playing with her toys. She needs at minimum a fenced yard. She responds to numerous commands and comes when called. But she doesn’t like being outside during strong wind. Her breed is super smart, and is known for barking at strangers when on her own turf. She can be shy upon meeting new people when introduced either on a walk or in her home, but quickly warms up. She is very loving. She needs to sleep indoors with her kennel (with the kennel door open or closed). She will also sleep with you, or on a mattress if you allow. She is a patient of Big Horn Vet, and she has been groomed by Suds N Buds and Doggie Doo. We intend to make sure that her new home is a good fit, and thus will charge a fee of $100 and investigate potential settings. We will include free of charge her kennel, toys, bowls, air tight food bin, and any food or treats on hand, and her blankets. We will not rehome Ginger with breeders, or with anyone who we feel is at risk of not providing proper care or not being a forever home. Transportation is possible/negotiable. Thanks for your consideration. ~ Ginger's People 307-217-2644

Kona Adult Female Medium Mix – Shepherd, Chow, Greyhound… House-trained: yes Spayed Up to date on vaccines Good in a home with: male dogs A note from Kona’s mom Kona is a sweet, happy, vibrant girl who absolutely loves life. She is a silly, playful, outgoing, loving soul. Her favorite things are running around in the mountains, cuddling her humans, chewing antlers, and playing with her stuffed animals and toys at home (oh, and peanut butter). She is a goofball, the best snuggly cuddle buddy, and the most enthusiastic, excited adventure buddy I’ve ever had. She will follow me around the house and flop down wherever I am, always engaged with me, just waiting to see what’s next – whether we are going to relax and read/chew bones or go out on our next adventure. She’s content to have company, know that she’s loved, and know that the outdoors are always waiting for her J … She and her sister were the best of friends but have decided they no longer want to get along. For this reason, I can no longer keep them both and Kona should not go to a home with another female-female dynamic. She would do great with a male dog her size or larger. She also does great outside at parks and on trails. A fenced yard and an active family would be best for Kona. She loves action, company, and having fun whenever possible. Please reach out if you or someone you know might be a good match and would want to make Kona a part of the family for life. She is so, so loved and has infinite love for her humans in return. I want to send her into another happy and loving home. Call Kim @ 973.886.1021
