The Animal Adoption Center has rehomed approximately 3,500 animals and counting since the inception in 2004.

How to Adopt

Our goal is to ensure that your new four-legged friend arrives fully equipped with all the skills necessary to make a successful adjustment to their new home and family life. The adoption process begins with an application form and concludes after the successful completion of a two week trial period designed to ensure a smooth transition for the animal and the new adopter.

Step 1: Search our adoptable animals

Browse our animals on our website, Petfinder, Facebook or visit the AAC to meet them in person.

Step 2: Fill out an application

Dog ApplicationCat Application

Step 3: Adoption Requirements

  • Our dog adoption fee is $175 and the cat adoption fee is $80
  • Potential adopters are required to foster for at least one night. Once your application is reviewed and approved we move forward with the adoption! We honor a two-week trial period to make sure your new pet fits in well with your family and lifestyle.
  • If during the trial period you find that the animal is not a suitable match the adoption fee will be refunded.
  • Any animal adopted from the AAC is always welcomed back if for any reason you can no longer care for him or her at any point in their life.
  • Adopters must be at least 24 years old to adopt a cat or dog. If you are under the age of 24 you may be approved on a case by case basis if you have a co-signer that is older than 24 and can accept responsibility if something happens.
  • Adopters who rent their home must have landlord approval in order to adopt.
  • We welcome out of area adopters, however we require prospective adopters to visit our facility and spend at least one night with the animal.

Step 4: Congratulations! You are the new mom or dad to a fur-baby!

Seniors for Seniors

The Animal Adoption Center launched the Seniors for Seniors adoption program in 2019. It was developed to help senior humans rediscover the joys of having a cat or dog in their lives, and the program places senior cats and dogs (typically over 7 years of age) with senior citizens who are 65 years of age or older.

The Animal Adoption Centers’ expert matchmakers will help you select a companion who fits into your lifestyle and housing situation at a reduced adoption rate of $50 for dogs and $15 for cats. If you are interested in adopting a senior animal, please call us at 307.739.1881 or email us at adopt@animaladoptioncenter.org. You are more than welcome to fill out a dog adoption application or cat adoption application and we can keep our eye out for a great fit.

Benefits of adopting

  • Research tells us that companion animals, such as cats and dogs, can help improve our physical and mental health. By adopting and spending time with an animal friend, you can experience the benefits of lowered stress levels and blood pressure.
  • Cats and dogs provide friendship for lonely individuals, and open opportunities for interacting with others which an older person may miss if family is far away.
  • The company of a beloved pet has been proven to reduce depression.
  • The quiet and doting home of a senior citizen is the perfect match for an older animal looking for a new home.
  • Senior animals are often gentler, calmer companionship, and often are already trained.

***THIS DOG IS NOT IN THE AAC PROGRAM*** PLEASE USE THE CONTACT INFORMATION PROVIDED BELOW. Emmie is 10 years old. My husband and I are separating, and neither of us will be able to take her with. Emmie is afraid of other dogs, so she would be best as a single pet. She is current on all her immunizations and neutered. On her last visit to the vet, she was diagnosed with a slight heart murmur, although it is asymptomatic. Emmie is housebroken. She will whine if she needs to be let out for potty. If shown where to go the “the spot” - she will continue to go potty in one area of the yard. She has always slept outside in the kennel or doghouse, as I wanted her used to that for when I go out of town and she needed a sitter. Her favorite activity is to chase the frisbee and go for walks. As is normal for her breed, she does not like rough housing. She doesn’t like to be hugged or picked up, but has unlimited desire to be petted. She would do better with adults than children, although she has done OK in a home with lots of activity and children - as long as she is not hugged, kissed or picked up. She knows commands of: heal, stay/wait, dance, come, no barking, sit, roll over. She would prefer a quiet home as she is used to being home alone with “mom” since the children left home several years ago. She is afraid of lightening and fireworks. She is free to a good home, all of her pet products will go with at no cost: igloo dog house with heated bed, heated water bowl, indoor pillow, kennel, water/food bowls etc. If interested contact Lisa at 208-521-8197.

TWO SPECIAL NEEDS CATS DESPERATELY NEED A HOME My husband and I are desperately searching for a home for two special needs cats. Their names are Mr. White and Tabby. We have had both Tabby and Mr. White neutered and vaccinated. Unfortunately, both have been recently tested and found to be positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Our two FIV positive cats are currently boarded at a local veterinary hospital where my husband and I live - Pocatello, Idaho. We met Mr. White and Tabby when each separately came to us looking for food and shelter last winter (2018-2019).We obliged and intended to find permanent homes for them. While staying with us they lived in heated shelters on our deck where we of course provided food and water, neutered them and provided veterinary care as needed. When one of the cats (Mr. White) developed a cough we took him to our vet for treatment. The diagnosis was an upper respiratory infection for which he received antibiotics, but the cough persisted. On the second visit it was decided he should be tested for FIV because he was not responding to the antibiotic shots that were given. We were shocked when the FIV test was positive, AND consequently we were not permitted to take him home with us because we have six other indoor cats. Therefore, we boarded him at the veterinary hospital and proceeded to test all of our indoor cats and the two additional cats we were caring for on our outdoor deck. One of the other two outdoor cats (Tabby) has tested positive for FIV as well, and he is also boarded at the veterinary hospital. My husband and I are devastated and desperate to find a sanctuary or a residential living arrangement that would accept or specializes in caring for FIV positive cats. Our understanding is that FIV positive cats can live relatively long and healthy lives if they are given proper care and are kept strictly indoors so as not to infect outdoor cats or, for that matter, non-positive indoor cats, who, under favorable circumstances, can co-exist in the same household with FIV positive cats. We very much hope that Mr. White and Tabby can be given an opportunity to live out their lives, but we cannot incorporate them into our household because we have four indoor cats of long standing (six years) and two 1 ½ year old kittens we acquired when their caretaker could no longer care for them due to illness (and subsequent death). The year and a half year olds have not been well accepted by our original four, and the fur flies more than we can consider safe for all the cats involved. As you know, FIV, unlike Feline Leukemia, is transmitted only through blood contact, usually deep bite wounds. Since FIV cats present absolutely no danger to humans we are hoping to locate a sanctuary or an individual household that is devoted to caring strictly for FIV positive cats or has a situation where both FIV and non-FIV cats can live safely together. Our FIV cats had been enjoying (past tense) very active, happy, and playful lives before they were tested and found positive for FIV, and we DO NOT want them to be euthanized, which some people we have spoken with have suggested may be the only possible solution! We believe euthanasia is wrong and should not be an option at all. Our goal is to find a way for Mr. White and Tabby to live long natural lives without compromising the safety of other cats. ***GINGER IS A COURTESY LISTING MEANING SHE IS NOT IN THE AAC PROGRAM*** PLEASE CONTACT HER CURRENT FOSTER LISTED IN HER DESCRIPTION. 307-217-2644 Our sweet Ginger (5-year-old Border Collie-Beagle mix) must be rehomed. A breed like hers needs plenty of activity and engagement that we cannot provide to her due to health and private circumstances. She was purchased as a puppy. She needs a family with kids or other pets, along with space to run. She is a great hiking dog, and protective of our cat. She is kennel trained, spayed, has a microchip, 2018 rabies shot, and is super healthy on a grain-free diet. She is around 50 lbs. She is not a lap dog or a lazy dog. She will become depressed if she doesn’t get much activity, so she needs consistency. She loves fetch, walks, and playing with her toys. She needs at minimum a fenced yard. She responds to numerous commands and comes when called. But she doesn’t like being outside during strong wind. Her breed is super smart, and is known for barking at strangers when on her own turf. She can be shy upon meeting new people when introduced either on a walk or in her home, but quickly warms up. She is very loving. She needs to sleep indoors with her kennel (with the kennel door open or closed). She will also sleep with you, or on a mattress if you allow. She is a patient of Big Horn Vet, and she has been groomed by Suds N Buds and Doggie Doo. We intend to make sure that her new home is a good fit, and thus will charge a fee of $100 and investigate potential settings. We will include free of charge her kennel, toys, bowls, air tight food bin, and any food or treats on hand, and her blankets. We will not rehome Ginger with breeders, or with anyone who we feel is at risk of not providing proper care or not being a forever home. Transportation is possible/negotiable. Kona Adult Female Medium Mix – Shepherd, Chow, Greyhound… House-trained: yes Spayed Up to date on vaccines Good in a home with: male dogs A note from Kona’s mom Kona is a sweet, happy, vibrant girl who absolutely loves life. She is a silly, playful, outgoing, loving soul. Her favorite things are running around in the mountains, cuddling her humans, chewing antlers, and playing with her stuffed animals and toys at home (oh, and peanut butter). She is a goofball, the best snuggly cuddle buddy, and the most enthusiastic, excited adventure buddy I’ve ever had. She will follow me around the house and flop down wherever I am, always engaged with me, just waiting to see what’s next – whether we are going to relax and read/chew bones or go out on our next adventure. She’s content to have company, know that she’s loved, and know that the outdoors are always waiting for her J … She and her sister were the best of friends but have decided they no longer want to get along. For this reason, I can no longer keep them both and Kona should not go to a home with another female-female dynamic. She would do great with a male dog her size or larger. She also does great outside at parks and on trails. A fenced yard and an active family would be best for Kona. She loves action, company, and having fun whenever possible. Please reach out if you or someone you know might be a good match and would want to make Kona a part of the family for life. She is so, so loved and has infinite love for her humans in return. I want to send her into another happy and loving home. Call Kim @ 973.886.1021
