How to Adopt

Our goal is to ensure that your new four-legged friend arrives fully equipped with all the skills necessary to make a successful adjustment to their new home and family life. The adoption process begins with an application form and concludes after the successful completion of a two week trial period designed to ensure a smooth transition for the animal and the new adopter.

Step 1: Search our adoptable animals

Browse our animals online or visit the AAC to meet them in person.

Step 2: Fill out an application

Dog ApplicationCat Application

Step 3: Adoption Requirements

  • Our dog adoption fee is $175 and the cat adoption fee is $80
  • Potential adopters are required to foster for at least one night. Once your application is reviewed and approved we honor a two-week trial period to make sure your new pet fits in well with your family and lifestyle.
  • Adoption fees will be deposited after the two week trial period. If during the trial period you find that the animal is not a suitable match the adoption fee will be refunded.
  • Any animal adopted from the AAC is always welcomed back if for any reason you can no longer care for him or her at any point in their life.
  • Adopters must be at least 24 years old to adopt a cat or dog.
  • Adopters who rent their home must have landlord approval in order to adopt.
  • We welcome out of area adopters, however we require prospective adopters to visit our facility and spend at least one night with the animal.

Step 4: Congratulations! You are the new mom or dad to a fur-baby!

***This is a courtesy listing. Rusty is not at the Animal Adoption Center. Please use the contact info below for more info!*** This is Rusty, a very handsome 13 month old neutered male red tri Australian Shepherd. He hasn't had the greatest start and was rather neglected - left outside, then left at a boarding kennel - from a young age. But Rusty is ready to put his past behind him! He is very smart, looks to you for direction and loves to learn. He is learning about toys and LOVES other dogs and to wrestle. He has great recall, rides well in the car, walks well on a leash, and can crate. He is not quite housebroken yet. He has been in foster care for just a week or so and has made great progress. He will require daily exercise and a regular routine. He does not bother chickens or horses. Call 699 4626 for more info on adopting Rusty.

  • Border Collie
***This is a courtesy listing. Tuck is not located at the animal adoption center. Please use the contact info below for more info.*** Meet Tuck! This adorable freckle face is a young Border Collie, maybe mixed with Cattle Dog. This sweet boy was absolutely terrified at the shelter, but started to come out of his shell quickly once arriving into loving foster care. We don’t know much about his past but he is proving to be a curious fellow and will continue to gain confidence and grow into a loyal companion with more training and guidance. Tuck is pretty unsure when meeting new people and takes a little time to warm up to strangers. But look out - he is a lovebug with his human friends! He smushes himself as close to them as he can and loves being around his people. He gets along fine with the other dogs in his foster home but pretty much does his own thing, so could be happy as an only dog. Tuck really loves to fetch, fetch fetch! He’ll be a great biking, running parter, or potential agility candidate too. He is a high energy fellow and will need a good chunk of vigorous exercise daily to be at his best. Tuck probably wasn’t taught much of anything in his former life, but he’s a smart kiddo and is food motivated, so training him should not be too tough. Since arriving into foster care he is being cratetrained and is nearly housetrained, too. He is working on learning general house manners, more confidence meeting new people (he tends to submissively pee), learning to walk on leash (leashed were scaaaaary things at first), and shows good off leash potential. Being a sensitive fellow, gentle training using reward-based methods only is important for Tuck! As a shy boy, adopters who will continue to expose him to the world at the pace he is comfortable with will also be good for Tuck’s confidence overall. All in all, Tuck is a lovely young dog who in sure to blossom in the right hands. He is available for adoption through a rural Wyoming shelter. Minnie is very loyal once she gains your trust. Minnie loves to hike but also loves to snuggle on the couch. Minnie is a bit timid at first, and would prefer a home with no small children. She gets along well with other dogs, but can be a bit jealous when it comes to her food.

If you are looking for a wonderful family dog, look no further! Bocce absolutely loves kids, and dogs, and is well behaved in the house. Bocce does have "herding" tendencies, so she just needs to remain on leash around bikes and skateboards. She is an excellent hiking dog. Don't miss this opportunity to give a wonderful dog a home! Here are some notes from Bocce's current home: Her likes: -KIDS!! She LOVES kids. All kids. -She is an awesome trail dog & when not on a biking trail is great off-leash. I always carry one with me & a pocket full of treats to get her back when something is coming her way that may make her uncomfortable. -Dogs. She is very social. She is strong, so her puppy-like play can seem rough, but she is just playing. She would love a doggie companion. -snuggles. She would cuddle with you all day long. -food. She is a food motivated creature. Don't leave things out on your counter unattended over night or if you leave the house. She will help herself. -She needs a 'safe spot' when you leave her home alone. She doesn't love a crate, but you can get her in with treats. Just put towels or a blanket in. If is is there too long, she will get bored & nibble apart a pad. She loved my son's room & that was her safe haven. Once she gets used to a new home, she will find her spot. I just wouldn't leave her roaming the house. -Mostly, she just loves to be with her people. A family where someone is home a lot or someone that could take her to work would be great. But, if she gets a good run or hike, she is perfectly content to hang at home. Her dislikes: -bikes & skateboards, but has gotten so much better in the last year.

COURTESY LISTING. PLEASE CONTACT ERIC AND CAROLINE @ 858-386-6806 Doogie is a four year old male chihuahua mix. He is in fantastic health and is up to date on all vaccinations and received his most recent annual exam in January. He was either born with nerve damage in his front left arm, or was injured at a very young age and did not properly heal, therefore he walks with a small limp. Nonetheless, he is not in pain and assumes all normal, healthy dog activities. Doogie loves to run, chase his ball and can often be found herding the bigger dogs at the dog park. Doogie is a snuggler! He loves couch time and burying deep under the covers when its time for bed. He loves sleeping in sunny spots and receiving cuddles and kisses. He is happiest in the lap of his owner or curled up at the foot of the bed. Doogie was adopted by my husband and I out of an abusive home three years ago in San Francisco and has received the most love and affection a pup could ask for since the day he was brought home. We had a baby girl over a year ago and it is growing more and more difficult to balance the relationship between the curiosity of our toddler and Doogie's desire to not be on the receiving end of her ever-growing curiosities. It was with much grief and difficulty that we decided to send him to Wyoming to live with friends that promised an even greater adventure for Doogie, but last minute circumstances have them moving back to New York and they are unable to bring him along. We now find ourselves once again seeking a stable long-term home for Doogie where he will be accepted and unconditionally loved. Doogie does bite if he is afraid, and can be very protective of his resources and owners. Adoption by an experienced small dog owner who knows how to provide consistent boundaries for dogs that try to walk the line would be the ideal scenario. He can be very anxious in new situations and until he is fully comfortable, and as a result will display anxious behavior such as whining, barking and jumping. Once he knows everyone around him and is comfortable, he is haps as a clam, and is a lover! He craves stability and consistency. Doogie would not do well in a home with young children or in a home that receives frequent visits from strangers. He is best in an environment with lots of exercise and room to explore, preferably with other dogs or animal siblings as he thrives in a pack dynamic. There are certain bad habits that he falls into once he gains comfort in an environment, but he has such a desire to please; I believe these habits can be broken with consistent and effective training. Doogie has a heart of gold and has the potential of being an incredible companion. If someone were to invest their efforts in Doogie, I know the outcome would be very rewarding. I would be happy to discuss Doogie further if anyone is interested in taking him on. Thank you, Eric and Caroline Richardson 858-386-6806?

***ARIES IS A COURTESY LISTING*** Aries is not located at the Animal Adoption Center. The owner is privately trying to re-home him. Please use the contact info listed below. Aries is a 9 yr old lab mix who loves to get attention from people petting him. He is a good, mellow dog and is easy going; however, still loves to go on walks. He is used to having his own dog bed and takes them with pleasure. He does require insulin injections and thyroid medication 2x/day with meals. He doesn't do well with other dogs as he does like his food too much, and we have found out doesn't do well with small or active children. We love our dog but obviously our child has to come first so we would love to find a good home as we think he still has several good years in him. He really is a good dog when he is the only dog and our child isn't around. He loves to be loved. My (Heidi) number is 720-934-3429 for anyone interested.
